Winter Is Coming…

game-of-thrones

Game of Thrones may now be over for another long and gruelling year but winter is still coming and the temperature is slowly dropping each day. We know it’s only just turned to autumn but now is the best time to start thinking about how you will prepare your hydroponic system for the colder months to come. The cold temperatures can have a detrimental effect on your plant’s growth. The environment is key when trying to get the best yield from your plant. A sign that the temperature is getting too low for some plants is that their stems turn purple and the rate of photosynthesis levels decrease. So here are our top tips on how you can make sure your crops still thrive in the winter seasons.

thermometerKeep an eye on the temperature – The root zone of your plants are very susceptible to the cold, if your roots reach temperatures of 19°C the growth of your root will begin to slow causing the cells to become damaged. With average temperatures in winter outside being 10°C, it is important that you keep your plant’s roots between 20°C and 21°C. This will help with the uptake your nutrients helping to improve your plant’s growth. We recommend researching your plant’s individual optimum temperature as different plants will thrive in different temperatures. For warm season crops like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers temperatures should be 18°C – 21°C at night and 21°C – 28°C, 30°C max. For cold season crops like broccoli, lettuce and onions temperatures should be 10°C – 16°C at night and 16°C – 21°C in the day.

windRegulate the air circulation – It’s common knowledge that heat rises, leaving the floor cooler in the winter months. A way to tackle this from happening and heat collecting at the ceiling is to ensure there is sufficient air circulation, this is vital in the winter months. Maintaining a steady airflow throughout the room means that your plant has the optimum growing conditions.

humidityCheck the humidity – Winter is one of the driest times of the year and if you can feel the effects so can your plants. Adding a humidifier to your room can help to rectify this problem. This will stop your plants from becoming dry. Be sure not to overdo it because you could cause too much moisture which may lead to issues such as mould.

cabinetNutrient storage – If your room falls below 5°C this can cause crystallization of your nutrient meaning that you will have to throw away the full bottle as this will make it unusable. We advise that you keep your nutrient stored in a cool, dry place which is not too cold.
